Open Space refers to group meetings which are organized in an informal fashion and without pre-set agenda. The facilitation encourages the issues and agenda to emerge form the group in which the group will take responsibility over the outcome. This type of group facilitation is called “Open Space Technology” . It has been developed in 1985 by Harrisson Owen. “Open Space” has been used at Boeing, Shell, Unilever and many more with 100.000 workshops in more than 120 countries. The “Open Space Technology” has been proven to be extremely effective to the companies. In China it is relatively new and therefore, the founder ,Mr Harrisson Owen will visit Shanghai to introduce the “Open Space” together with Mr Gijs van Wezel in March 2009.

Since the mid 80’s: we witnessed a lot of materials changes in China. Management styles have not yet changed a great deal.

Staff participation is unknown at the work floor or at meetings. There should be more staff participation in a running business: private company of government-owed. It would create enthusiasm, self-organisation hence enhancing pride and self-esteem to the staffs. It will ultimately create more harmony which in turn would reduce high staff turnover.
